The Geography of Lost Teeth

So happy that I lost my tooth. I want to tell everybody!

Morgane lost another tooth! We were sitting in a restaurant for lunch and she was eating a grilled cheese and suddenly she spat out a tooth. Now she has no front teeth, but she still speaks surprisingly well. She showed it to practically everyone in the restaurant and then came back here to show it to everyone else.

Before the tooth came out, we were having some mother-daughter time exploring Panmure Island – the beach and the lighthouse. It’s very hot out again today. And humid.

I am using Ghis’s computer and for some reason, it makes any picture I try to post sideways. So the pictures will follow in a day or two…

Mac Crack

My laptop has a crack in the casing and Ghis has gone to Charlottetown to drop it off. They said it will only take 2-3 days. Because of this, I am manning the internet cafe for him. So far, I haven’t had to do anything but sit here and surf on the internet. Now I have two customers on the internet, too. I may have to serve ice cream.

Breezy Morning

There’s a nice breeze this morning and we’re hoping it won’t get as hot as yesterday. I had a great shift in the restaurant last night and nice chats with the people I met (from Rimouski, Brooklyn, etc.) People really come from all over to visit PEI. And I can see why.

Morgane survived her sleepover and is off at camp for her second day.

We have new neighbours in the apartments. I was serving customers on the restaurant’s patio last night when I started hearing yelling and hollering and very loud music from the apartments. I was worried.

Luckily, Morgane wasn’t there last night. When we got there are introduced ourselves (we’re your neighbours), they said they were from Newfoundland. They were singing and playing guitar and drinking up a storm. Even the grandparents were telling everyone that there wasn’t enough booze. One lady has a very loud voice that carries. We told them when we were going to bed and it was mostly quiet after that, but then I heard the same voice at 6:30am this morning. They are only staying two more nights. Please send me more patience!

After Singing Sands, we stopped at the North-eastern tip of the PEI. We visited the lighthouse and even got to climb up to the very top. Amazing view! Morgane loved climbing up all the stairs. We decided that it would be cool to live in a lighthouse – and I remember thinking the same thing when I was a kid! Well, off to work on organizing the World’s Smallest Library this morning.

Day Off

Today was our day off and we went to Singing Sands Beach north of Souris (where the ferry leaves PEI to go to the Magdalen Islands. It was an amazing beach with shallow water and sand that seemed to go on forever. And even better, dogs were allowed!

And our poor dog. In her old age, she is hurting herself a lot. We have to watch her when we’re walking or she will walk right off a cliff. But today we were walking along a boardwalk and her paw got stuck in the small crack between two boards. Ghis and I held her tightly so she wouldn’t hurt herself more trying to escape. We tried to pull her paw out of the crack, but it wouldn’t come. It seemed like we’d have to hurt her to get it out. It was terrible, but finally Ghis made her sit down and then her paw just slipped out. What a scare!

Finally, last night I had my first tables to serve all by myself (five-course lobster dinners). I had a table of 4, then a table of 2 and then another 2. And then the power went out! So they kept cooking in the dark and luckily everyone was sitting on the patio anyway. We had to continue working and it was very dark and the cash register had no electricity so all the bills had to be redone by hand. Crazy! I hope the rest of my waitressing will be less eventful.

Tomorrow Morgane is starting her nature daycamp with our hosts’ daughter. That means I’ll have a little time to myself during the day. I’ll post more pics tomorrow. Right now the bugs are eating me alive!

Hot, hot, hot

All summer, everywhere I go, this hot and sunny weather follows me. Sometimes it’s great, but sometimes it’s too hot to really want to be out and about.

Went to the farmer’s market this morning, just outside of the internet cafe. Met chef and author Michael Smith and his son Gabe and got a signed copy of his book for my mom (and a photo!). Morgane spent one of her tooth fairy dollars on a sunflower. We also bought purple carrots. Everything at the market was organic and looked great.

Then we went to the laundromat and washed our clothes. Now we’re back at the apartment and the girls are trying to agree on what to play. Looks like they’re going to collect creatures from the water’s edge.

Lazy Morning

It’s nice to have a lazy morning. Ghis is gone to the internet cafe. Morgane and I are hanging out. She has put a few sea snails in a jar and has been observing them.

I will probably start serving my own tables tonight. I’m wondering if I can find some black shoes today. The blouse I bought at a discount store at a nearby stripmall and the shoes were 50% off at a second hand store. They are size 8, ALMOST my size. They feel okay for a few hours, but I hope to find something better.

The Fishing Village
The Fishing Village

Last night Ghis and I went for a drive. Morgane gets to hang out with Alexandrea and her babysitter (most nights, while her parents work in the restaurant). We discovered an old fishing village, like nothing I’ve seen before.

Carmanah has really taken to seafood and crunches any stinky shells she can find. The rest of the time, she spends lying in the grass in front of our apartment.
